Golden Hour vs Overcast Light | What's Actually Best for Family Photos?
It's one of the most common questions I get as a Sydney family photographer: "Should we shoot at golden hour?" And while I love a warm sunset as much as anyone, the honest answer is — it depends. Both golden hour and overcast light are beautiful. They just give you something different.
Golden Hour
Golden hour (that window an hour before sunset) delivers warm, glowy, cinematic light. Colours feel rich, skin looks gorgeous, and there’s a romance to the images that’s hard to replicate. It works beautifully for outdoor family sessions in Sydney’s parks, beaches and bushland. The catch? You’ve got about 20 minutes before it disappears, you’re working around a specific time of day, and with toddlers - that’s sometimes a hard ask, but entirely worth it.
Overcast Light
Overcast light is soft, even and forgiving. No harsh shadows under the eyes, no squinting kids, no blown-out backgrounds. On a cloudy Sydney day the light wraps around your subjects in a way that feels natural and timeless. It’s why so many of my favourite family sessions have been on grey winter mornings. My recent Westleigh family session is proof - drizzle, moody skies and some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever delivered.
The truth is, as a natural light photographer I’ve learned to love whatever the Sydney sky gives me. If you’re booking a family photography session and worried about the weather - don’t be. We work with what we’ve got, and often what we’ve got is magic.
